What we do > Incident >Nov. 21, 2009 > July 11, 2010
November 21, 2009, Ryan Woodward. Coxswain We found sea conditions building from a couple of feet of chop off of Blackie Spit to full 5-6 feet with the occasional breaking 8-10 footer as we approached the outer marker where we located the sailing vessel. On arrival we established very brief verbal communications with the vessel (limited by sea, wind conditions in addition to the inability of the sailing vessel to control their course effectively) and determined they were ok and wanted us to escort them in. We escorted the vessel in from a safe distance and had a couple of tense moments when it appeared that it was going to get thrown over. The skipper did an admirable job of maintaining control and was able to navigate in successfully. On follow-up with Joint Rescue Coordination Centre after the call, the controller passed on their thanks for our efforts and confirmed that they did have contact with the sailing vessel just prior to our arriving on scene; the skipper had called to let them know that they could see us coming and that they were very relieved to have us there with them.
