On Saturday July 10, 2010 at 21:00 hrs CCGA Unit 5 Crescent Beach was tasked, by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, to respond to reports of a powerboat on fire about 2 miles north of East Point off Saturna Island. The Unit's fast response vessel, Vigilant, departed base approximately 20 minutes after the page and spotted the smoke as they were outward bound just past the last marker. The vessel on fire, a 44 foot Viking powerboat, was about 10 miles away. Vigilant's crew immediately headed into Georgia Strait with an eta on scene of approximately 15 minutes. As they approached the stricken vessel they were advised by US Coast Guard Radio that US Coast Guard Station Bellingham had been in communications with the people from the stricken vessel and reported that two adults, two children, and two dogs were in the vessel's dinghy heading across the Strait to Crescent Beach Marina. Vigilant quickly reversed its course and headed back towards Crescent Beach. Although sea conditions were fairly calm it was just after sunset and there was considerable concern for the safety of the family crossing the Strait and the shipping lanes in a dinghy. As Vigilant searched the Strait heading back to Crescent Beach they were informed that the dinghy had reached the Marina where it was met by Unit 5 members. They were wet and cold and traumatized by their experience but there were no injuries and no medical assistance was required. Unit 5 members provided blankets and water, including a water bowl for two very thirsty little dogs, and assisted the victims in dealing with their ordeal.
